Summary:
We are seeking an Horticultural Intern for our client in Lodi, California.
Within our client's processing tomato breeding program, you will assist in the planning, monitoring and input relating to the operational breeding process to ensure the long-term profitability and success of the breeding program.
The typical work shift will be 7:
00AM to 3:
30PM M-F, with some overtime on Saturdays to be expected infrequently.
Note:
A valid California driver's license is required for this role as well as a MVR background check.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate with breeder regarding the scheduling of phenotyping needs.
At the appropriate time and using the approved method, agreed with the breeder, make evaluations for identified phenotypic traits.
Accurately record data in a consistent way.
Ensure rating scale is understood.
For photography, ensure lighting is consistent.
Evaluate at similar times of the day.
Where possible, utilize digital methods of phenotypic data collection (e.
g.
field tablets)Using breeder's selection list, assist in the correct harvesting and processing of tomato fruit through to packaging of the biomaterial, and recording required data.
Be competent in undertaking protocols in fruit quality laboratory.
Assisting in accurate testing of tomato samples, collection of data and maintenance of equipment.
Assist with monitoring of crop and modification of plant growing environment, including pest and disease scouting, to ensure optimum plant growth.
Able to understand and translate maps and assist with accurate transplantingFollow the required methods for collection, formatting and sharing of data.
Operate Microsoft Office suite of software, especially Excel, for data collection, summarizing and reporting needs, and Outlook and Teams for communicating and scheduling.
Qualifications:
Completed high school/GED required; Associate Degree in Horticulture, Agronomy or Plant Breeding is a plus.
Previous experience in plant breeding preferred; experience in science-related study or work requiredWorking in hot, cold, wet, humid and dusty conditions; preferably within greenhouse and fieldExposed to tomato pollen and fruitWork needing good dexterity and attention to detailMaking observations and recording dataFollowing Health Safety and Environment (HSE) regulations and maintaining a safe work environmentKnowledge/Skills:
Ability to follow routine proceduresUnderstanding of agricultural practices and the processing tomato Industry preferredGeneral Computer Skills:
